From biomedical to art?

My dad has always been a firm believer in the fact that if you get a degree, any degree, it will open up a world of possibilities to you.  Well for artist Mark Doolittle his door opening degree is in biomedical research, which somehow led him to art.

Yeah I know what you are thinking, how do you connect those dots, but when you see his work you will understand how the two are working nicely together.

Have you figured out what most of his work is made from?  In case, you couldn't figure it out, they mostly wood carvings except the circles which are gourds.

Does that make them more or less amazing?  Is this something that you don't think is art?  Do you have any ideas what you would do?

Yarn Bombing!!

Our nation's capital had a crime committed!  Please take a look at the evidence photos and tell me what you think?

So in your expert opinion what do you have to say about this crime?  Who do you think did it?  Is it a crime or is it art?  If you were the criminal, what would you do?  What object would you yarn bomb?

Taking writing to new levels

What if you could take your writing and turn it into a sculpture?  Would you be more interested in writing?  I could not find any info on these two pictures, but I really thought it was an interesting concept.

Would you like to create this?  Can you think of an interesting story that you would like to pop the words out into a specific shape?  For instance, what about making Hogwarts castle out of Harry Potter's story?  Do you have another idea?  Or do you like the idea of just a random poem like these above?

Just too cool not to share

I have seen other artists play with sand on light tables, but I have never seen someone use sand on a potter's wheel to create performance art until I was looking for yesterday's video.  Then I ran across this video and thought I had to share it with all of you.

Watch and let me know what you think.

So I want to know what you think?  Is this something you could see and yourself sitting and watching?  Did you find it memorizing or sickening?

Tricking the eye

So today I have decided to post a video of how to draw an optical illusion.  If you want to take this challenge and try it yourself I will give you extra credit.  But you have to bring me your drawing and show it to me in class.

So what do you think?  Are you up to the challenge?  Bring me in your version and I will give you extra credit.  If nothing else tell me what you think of this art form.  Is it an art form?

Don't let the horse drift by

I know where we live we don't see a lot of driftwood, this is more of an ocean or big lake thing, but I am guessing you all know what it is.  Driftwood is just like it sounds, it is wood that has drifted in on the water from wherever it came from.

Anyways, artist Heather Jansch has been collecting driftwood to create amazing life-size horse sculptures.  She does have an steel frame that is hidden underneath fiberglass that is the main support of her horses, but the she takes the driftwood and covers the frame.

What do you think of her sculptures?  Could you be patient enough to wait for the right piece of driftwood to float up into your area to finish your sculpture?  Other than horses, what would you turn the driftwood into?

What amazing creatures

Have you ever stopped to think about what amazing creatures we are?  I am often amazed by the wonderful things that man has made.  I would like to take you on a short adventure to some of these amazing man made creations.

Gardening houses in Thailand
I would love to know your thoughts on these places.  Do you have any other amazing places that you wish I would have posted a picture of?

Mixing it up

I love mixed media projects.  I love taking a variety of items and styles and putting them together into one cohesive image.  I also love the idea of getting to mix and match and just play until I am happy with a work of art.

I am not the only artist that loves mixed media art, artist Judith Kindler is also in love with this style of art.  She combines wooden panels, images and sometimes objects together to form her works.

The Package
So what do you think of Judith's work?  Did you like one of these more than another?  Is this something you could see yourself doing?  If you could work in her style what images would you create?

Sticks, Stones and Drywall Mud?

Okay, if you have figured nothing out from these blogs, I hope you have figured out that art can be made from anything, at any time.  The next artist I found is Tom Moberg, and his medium of choice is drywall mud.

He takes actual tree branches and incorporates them into wall art.  He has done work all over the country and here are a few of my favorites.

Some of his work is in commercial buildings while some of it is in residential locations.  Did anyone recognize which two images are local?  Two of the above images are from Sanford Hospital.

So what do you think of his work?  Would you love to have one of his pieces in your house?  What about your workplace?  Do you think he could make one for the school, or do you think you could make one for the school?  If so, what design should we have?

Can you identify this little mystery?

So I came across this unique artist.  I don't know their name, they go by EV, but I was wondering if you could figure out what she has created?

Take a look...

Have you figured out what they are?

I don't want to spoil the surprise, but they are miniature books.  The majority of them are about 1 inch in size.  If you didn't figure that out, now go look at them again, and this time look at the intricate design work, the little hidden compartments, keys, leather detailing and potion vials that come with them.

Now what do you think of them?  Is this something you would consider making?  Or would you even consider owning them?  They are made for people who have miniature fantasy houses or worlds, like dollhouses.  I didn't know this existed either.  What do you think of it?  Could you see yourself having a hobby like this?  I'm not judging, just curious.
